Why CI?

Language is acquired through comprehensible input.  We linked meaning to images and concepts when we learned our first language and it how we will acquire a second language.  One thing I love about comprehensible input is how engaging it is.  All students can experience successs in the CI class, albeit with some errors; but errors are allowed.  We made similar errors when began speaking our first language, too.  To me, the most important thing I want my students to be able to do when they leave me at the end of  the year is communicate.  If they can communicate with a native speaker, then I have achieved my goal.

Why I use CI Comprehensible input evens the playing field in a typical public school classroom.  Students acquire Spanish much like they did their first language.  In our department we our slowly coming around to the idea of comprehensible input.  Four of the nine teachers are on board, and slowly, through the power of Free Voluntary Reading and the success of the students in CI classrooms, I hope that the other teachers will come on board.  There is so much joy in a classroom taught free from the tethers of a textbook or a vocabulary list or a grammar sequence.  And the natural communication, through speaking and writing, is a beautiful thing to behold.
